Ephesians 2

In biblical history there has always been a dividing wall between Jews and Gentiles. Gentiles are those who are everyone of different nations, people, language, tribe, that are not Jews. That means that all of us who are not Jewish fall into that category. So, if you and I lived in the era of the Old Testament, we would not be able to take part in the promises of God. God had given specific laws to Moses of how the temple was to be made, and specific instructions on making the Ark of the Covenant. According to the law, only a Jew specifically from the tribe of Levi would be able to enter the most Holy place to experience closeness to God, and it was only the Jewish people who were under the covenant of being named the people of God. Every other person in that era had no way of accessing God, speaking to God, or had no one to plead on their behalf to God. But in this chapter, we are given hope. Paul begins the chapter with a deep dive into the gospel saying that all people, including Jews are dead in their trespasses and sins, and Jesus Christ came to die on the cross, to bring people to life when they repent and believe in him. There is now neither Jew nor Gentile because of the gospel of Christ. What the gospel has accomplished is that there is no more hostility between Jew or Gentile because the gospel is for all people and the gospel makes them into one people. Gentiles now have access to God’s presence, we can speak to God, we can trust God, we can take part in the promises of God because of the gospel. Paul goes even further to say that God’s people are no longer just Jewish people, but God’s people also are Gentile people. The Jews in the Old Testament were in fact God’s chosen people, but under the New Covenant, God’s chosen people include people from all nations, tribes, tongues, ethnicities. The beautiful thing about this, is that we saw in chapter one that this was God’s plan all along, to bring salvation to all people through the gospel of Jesus Christ. So, there are no longer Jews or Gentiles but when we believe in Christ those identities take a back seat, and we all become one man meaning one people group that are members of the household of God. We who were once lost, who were in darkness have been swept into the household of God through the gospel of Christ. We did not deserve this mercy, we did not deserve grace, but as Paul said in the coming ages Christ will show us the immeasurable riches of his grace and kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Praise God for the gospel of Christ, that through his death and resurrection we can be people of God. God shows no partiality, but those who come to his Son Jesus Christ and repent of their sins, will enter into all the promises of God. It is through the blood of Christ that we have been brought near to the throne of grace.
