The gospel is, by nature, surprising because the Lord allows Himself to appear as though He has lost for a brief moment before revealing that He has defeated sin, shame, death, and the devil by His own death. 1 Samuel 5 foreshadows this aspect of the gospel in a beautiful way as God appears to have lost, but ultimately defeats His enemies, the Philistines.
